Civic Park in Timișoara

Civic Park or City Park is located in the centre of Timișoara, behind the Continental Hotel, and spreads out over an area of 76,000 m².

Between 1730 and 1961, the Transylvania Casern used to function on this site, one of the biggest military caserns in Europe, located near the fortress of Timișoara. The purpose of demolishing it was to build a civic centre, a project which was abandoned, and Civic Park appeared instead.

Between 1968 and 1971 the tallest building in Timișoara was built – Continental Hotel, as well as the avenue crossing the park; later, numerous trees were planted, that now offer a green oasis in the city centre, a place for transit and recreation.

Civic Park also houses one of Timișoara's symbols - the floral clock, whose design is changed twice a year.
