The Route of the 1989 Revolution
Puține evenimente au lăsat o amprentă atât de mare asupra Timișoarei precum Revoluția din 1989. Vrem să facem această amprentă vizibilă pentru timișoreni și turiști prin proiectul Traseul Revoluției.
Nine emblematic points related to the Revolution will undergo various urban interventions: Piața Maria, Podul Traian, Piața Victoriei, Piața Libertății, Piața Sf. Gheorghe, the Prefecture, Podul Decebal, Parcul Poporului, and the Heroes’ Cemetery. The route will be digitized and will integrate AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) elements, together with a dedicated application to tell the story of December 15–22, 1989.
The project also includes upgrading the pavements to make the space accessible for all categories of pedestrians, with differentiated public lighting, tactile markings, audio signage, and curbs level with the roadway. Urban furniture and visual markings will follow a unified concept across all locations.
The character of each place will be preserved and enhanced, and for two areas (Piața Maria and the County Council) complete public lighting studies will be conducted, with proposed ambient lighting solutions. Technology takes center stage in this project.
The Revolution Route is a project with an estimated value of nearly €4.3 million and is the only collective historical memory project of a Romanian municipality to be approved from the start under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
The Timișoara City Hall has launched the procurement procedure for “Design services (DALI phase) for the implementation of the investment objective: the 1989 Revolution Memorial (Route) in Timișoara.” The documentation will also include the development of the curatorial and memorial concept to define the 1989 Revolution route in Timișoara. The design contract is valued at 232,135 lei (VAT included).
