Rail travel represents an opportunity to develop tourism in Timiș County by using an efficient, sustainable, and safe means of transportation.

Whether we are talking about school trips, tourists who wish to travel in large groups, families, or specialized segments of visitors, rail tourism has the potential to offer specific activities and experiences.

Moreover, in a destination that does not yet cover all transport connections between major cities and more remote tourist attractions, the railway can be a solution for developing tourism, increasing the number of nearby journeys, and offering more options to travelers.

Train journeys are a form of slow tourism, allowing visitors to relax and explore multiple locations within a single holiday.

Our project also aligns with the context in which the European Environment Agency encourages people to choose rail transport, and railway travel has proven to be the most sustainable form of passenger and freight transportation, with greenhouse gas emissions from this mode in Europe accounting for only 0.5%.

At a time when sustainability is a key trend in the transport industry, rail travel is advancing across Europe, with countries creating and expanding routes and programs that connect them—and Romania must keep pace with this movement.

Timiș County is joining those taking the first steps toward developing sustainable tourism through rail travel and is launching its first promotional material dedicated to rail tourism, introducing several routes suitable for weekend or one-day trips, ideal for families with children, youth groups, or school excursions.
